Gulmarg has quickly become a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders around the world - from absolute beginners to experts - you'll find them all here in winter. Nestled amongst the beautiful mountains of Kashmir, Gulmarg boasts of one of the highest ski lifts in the world and the best slopes in the country. Have you ever pictured yourself speeding down vast snow slopes with the gigantic Himalayan mountains in the backdrop? The Basic Skiing Course in Gulmarg is the best option to get introduced to the sport of skiing and spend a wonderful winter in the Kashmir Himalayas. Getting your skiing to the next level is our goal with this program. It is best suited for people who already have basic skills in skiing and are comfortable with slightly higher slope gradients and now are looking at getting to the higher powder bowls of the mountain. The focus of this course is will be to teach you off-piste skiing and to make you comfortable in back-country skiing. We will dedicate most of our time exploring un-groomed powder slopes and backcountry slopes and will also test your skills to the limit by taking you to some challenging yet safe lines in the bowls. Gulmarg has huge potential for deep Himalayan powder skiing in its almost 1350 meters of skiable terrain. Gulmarg Gondola- one of the highest ski lifts in the world, drops you off at almost 4000 m exposing the labyrinth of some amazing skiable off-piste slopes and back-country opportunities. It has something to offer for people of all skill levels. This is not any regular ski course. It is conducted by some of the most highly experienced and esteemed professionals of Skiing. Our chief instructors are - Mustaq Ahmed, one of the most qualified backcountry ski guides in the whole of Gulmarg who has been skiing since the early 80s with an experience of 25+ years in ski instruction; Mahmood Lone who happens to be a highly experienced backcountry ski guide and one among the only 5 certified national ski coaches in India. Some of the other highly qualified ski instructors involved in this ski course are - Javed Reshi, Rafiq, Jahangir, Saba and Jayant Mohanty. Among the only 16 backcountry guides in India, 3 of them are on our panel. Participants in our ski courses will be provided with a Certificate of Participation, Graduation and merit certificate with grades A/B/C to those who complete all lessons and pass the tests as well as a Certificate from J&K tourism. Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Gulmarg

We will pick you up from Srinagar airport and drive to Gulmarg. Welcome and check in to your Rooms at the hotel. In the evening we’ll run you through the program outline including goals and training objectives. Have dinner and retire for the night.

Day 2

Gear and safety information sessions

Morning Tea and then breakfast later meet key Ski & Snow Board School representatives and trainers and also collect your Snowboard and Shoes (though we recommend at this stage to have your own equipment). Today we’ll also hold gear and safety information sessions. Later move to Ski Slopes and will be a half day on the snow including a short lesson to refresh your ski/ snowboard skills learnt earlier and a chance to get your legs back into action. Back to Ski School for Dinner.

Intermediate powder slopes

Today will be focused around you taking you to some intermediate powder slopes in a very controlled and safe way. We will be exploring the area near the Khongdori (Phase1), the jungle trails and some direct lines next to the Gondola lines.

Day 5

Skiing on higher slopes, above Phase 1

The next 5 days will be focused at taking to the higher slopes and deeper powder. We shall spend these days on the chair car, which is above the Phase 1 and has a wider area of play on each sides. Our instructors will keep a keen eye on your technique and help you correct it wherever required.

Mandatory documents: What are the mandatory documents required for the course?

Since this is an advanced course in Skiing you should provide basic or intermediate skiing course completion certificate, though not mandatory. Please provide us with your photo identification and also carry the same with you.

Transport: In case we opt for the transport with you, where will you pick us from and where will you drop?

You will be picked up from Srinagar airport and dropped off at the same location.

Transport: What time will you drop us at the end point on last day of the course?

Expect to reach Srinagar airport by afternoon.

Miscellaneous : Is there an option to offload my backpack/luggage?

You can leave your luggage at your hotel since we will be coming back and spending the night at the same hotel throughout the course.

Miscellaneous : Who will lead us on the course?

You will have certified ski instructors leading you on this course. The participants' to instructor ratio is 4:1.

Miscellaneous : Are there any local stores/shops from where I can shop for necessities?

Gulmarg has a decent range of shops. However, do not leave anything for last-minute buying.

Miscellaneous : Is it safe for solo woman traveller to participate in Fixed departures?

Yes, it is absolutely safe for solo women to travel in fix departures. Women on the course will be sharing a room with each other.

Miscellaneous : Will you give certificates on completion of the course?

Participants in our ski courses will be provided with a Certificate of Participation, Graduation and merit certificate with grades A/B/C to those who complete all lessons and pass the tests as well as a Certificate from J&K tourism.

Weather conditions: What will the temperatures be like during this course?

The skiing course will happen in the months of January to March when the temperatures will drop to as low as -15 deg Celsius and will see an ample amount of fresh snow and snowfall. During day time temperature varies from -4 to 2 degree celsius. During the night, the temperature can dip till -15 degrees celsius but we stay in heated rooms to stay warm.

Weather conditions: When will there be snow on this course?

Months of January to March sees a lot of snowfall which is also the perfect time for skiing in Gulmarg.

Equipment and facilities: What equipment will you provide for the course?

You will be provided with all the equipment needed for the skiing course - skis, goggles, ski gloves, helmets, ski boots. If you have ski equipment for your own then you can carry the same for the course.

Accommodation type: What will be the accommodation type in this course?

During the course, you will be accommodated in hotels on a twin/triple sharing basis.

Age limit: What is the minimum & maximum age limit?

The minimum age limit is 13 years. However, minors aged between 13 to 17 should be accompanied by their parents or guardians. If you are above the age of 60, kindly carry a medical certificate from your doctor that deem you fit for adventure activities like trekking.

Nearby attraction: What are the nearby attractions that I can explore?

Dal Lake: The jewel of Srinagar, the Dal lake is synonymous to a visit to Srinagar and almost a visual definition to the town. Spread over a straggling 26 sq.kms, it is the most photogenic stretch of this instance of paradise on earth and undoubtedly also the most sought after of attractions.
Mughal Gardens: Built in the Mughal era, donning its majestic architecture, are the Mughal gardens. The garden is a combination of the Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Gardens & Chashm-e-Shahi. The most prominent feature of the gardens its long stretches of cascading fountains makes this a must see for every traveler.
Nishant Bagh: Laid out in 1633, the Nishant Bagh fondly known as the Garden of Joy. Its beauty is enhanced by the well-manicured landscapes, long avenues of Chinar & cypress trees, rare flowering plants, 12 terraces & several bubbling fountains that's cover the whole expanse of the garden.
Shankaracharya Temple: Visit this effulgent, age old temple in Srinagar to feel closer to the gods. Situated at a height of about 1100 feet on the south-east of the city, this sacred temple offers splendid views of the valley and the snow clad mountains of the Pir Panjal range.
Hazratbal: Hazratbal Mosque, situated on the western shore of the pristine Dal Lake, is a very sacred Muslim shrine in Hazratbal. Hazratbal's special significance is derived from the fact that it houses a heir of the prophet Muhammad, a relic, titled Moi-e-Muqqadas. The relic is only displayed to the public on religious occasions, usually accompanied by colourful fairs afterwards. The shrine commands a grand view of the lake and the mountain beyond, especially when its pristine white marble elegance is reflected in the waters of the lake.

Connectivity: How to Reach the base of the course & how to go back from the end point?

To get to Srinagar -
By Air: There are multiple flights daily directly from Delhi to Srinagar, or connecting flights from all major cities. This is the easiest way to reach Srinagar.
By Rail: Although Srinagar has a railway station, it is not linked to the Indian Railway network. The closest national railway station is Jammu Tawi, from where Srinagar is 270 km away. There are multiple trains from Delhi and Chandigarh to Jammu Tawi. From Jammu, you can make the road journey to Srinagar either via private or state run buses or private taxi.
By Road: The road distance from Delhi to Srinagar is 800 km if you are taking a taxi or driving down in a private vehicle. Direct buses to Srinagar are available from Jammu. From Srinagar airport, our vehicles will pick you up and drive to Gulmarg.

Connectivity: What is the cellular network connectivity for this trek?

All outstation prepaid connections do not work in J&K. You will need either a postpaid connection or a local prepaid connection.

Best Season: What are the best months to visit this trek?

The best months to do the skiing course is January to mid-March.

Eligibility: Is this course good for me?

The Advanced Skiing course is only for those who already have done a basic and an intermediate course in Skiing. It is for those adventurists and skiing enthusiasts who wish to get their skiing to the next level. It is best suited for people who already have basic skills in skiing and are comfortable with slightly higher slope gradients and now are looking at getting to the higher powder bowls of the mountain.
