How To Reach Uttarey

Uttarey is a small, unassuming village in the West district of Sikkim. As a town which sees very few tourists, it is known best for its picturesque setting and natural beauty. Surrounded by lush green high mountains which turn a deep shade of white during winters, this quiet little village is a haven for some much deserved peace and solitude. This modest village by the Nepal border also serves as a trail head for some off-beat treks like the Danphebir La trek. The trail for the trek flirts with the Indo-Nepal border. It goes in and out of both countries giving one a glimpse of the similarities and differences that lie on each side of this thin political line.  

 

By Air

The nearest airport to Uttarey is Bagdogra in West Bengal with a distance close to 160 kms between the two. Bagdogra is well connected to most major cities in India with frequent direct flights to this airport from states like Kolkata and Delhi. It is hard to get transportation straight out of the airport to get to Uttarey. You will need to make your way to Siliguri National Transport (SNT) bus terminus which is close to 15 kms from the airport. You will get transportation to come to Siliguri quite easily form the airport. Since the airport is far out from the city and everyone getting off at the airport is making their way into Siliguri, shared cabs are an easy find at the airport. Once in Siliguri, you can take any mode of transport to get to SNT. From SNT, you can get shared cars or private cabs to go to Uttarey which is about 160 kms from here.

If you are a group of more than 4, pre-booking a private cab to pick you up and drop you to Uttarey may be all cost, time and effort efficient.

 

By Train

The closest rail head to Uttarey is New Jalpaiguri at West Bengal. It is the same drill from here. Head out of the station and make your way to SNT (Siliguri National Transport) bus terminus. You should get shared jeeps to Uttarey and Jorethang. In case you do not get a direct cab to Uttarey, you can take one to Jorethang. Change your vehicle here. There will be many more shared or private options going into Uttarey from here which is 70 kms away from Jorethang.
