Dimapur is the largest city of Nagaland and also the gateway and commercial center of the state. Which means that if you plan to travel anywhere in Nagaland, you will probably be going through Dimapur. This city along the banks of the Dhansiri river near the border of Assam gets its name from a combination of Dimasa words. ‘Di’ means water, ‘ma’ is large and ‘pur’ means city making it a ‘large city by the river’.
Getting to Dimapur is really simple.
By Air:
Dimapur is the only airport in the state of Nagaland. Dimapur gets frequent inbound flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Imphal. If you are flying in from cities other than these, it is best to fly to Guwahati and catch the next flight to Dimapur. The airport is only 4 kms from the main city; getting transportation for places like Khonoma and Kohima (Nagaland’s capital) is no hassle at all.
By Rail:
The only railway station in Nagaland happens to be in Dimapur. There are frequent direct trains from all cities like Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. If you don’t get a direct train from your city of travel to Dimapur which suits your time, you can break your journey. Guwahati is well connected to all major states of India. Reach Guwahati, you will have more train options from here to get to Dimapur.
By Road:
Night buses connect Dimapur and Kohima to Guwahati and Shillong. You can also choose to get private cabs from neighbouring states to drive down to Dimapur. The local transport system for in-city and intercity travel is well established. You can get rickshaws and cabs to go between Dimapur, Kohima and Khonoma very easily. There are also shared cab options which are easily available. The taxi stand in Dimapur is right opposite the railway station.
