How To Reach Dibrugarh

Neeti Singhal

Last updated: 31-07-2023

The Tea City of India, Dibrugarh, rests in Upper Assam surrounded by tea estates that are characteristic of the state. The name of the city has an interesting past as does the city itself. When the British came to the region, they built a fort alongside a river. It is possible that the city got named after the ‘Dibaru’ river or it gets its name from the word ‘Dibru’ which means ‘blister’ and ‘garh’ which means ‘fort’. Both of these are Bodo-Kachari words. The Bodo-Kacharis add ‘di’ as a prefix to denote ‘water’ like Dimpaur which literally translates to A City with Great Lakes. If you pay close attention to the names when you visit Assam, we’re sure you will find a lot of recurrences of the prefix ‘di’.

Dibrugarh is well connected to major cities of India through air, rail and road.

By Air

Dibrugarh has a domestic airport which receives regular inbound flights from all major cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi. It is named the Mohanbari Airport. The Mohanbari Airport is just 15 kms out of the main city. There are daily flights to Dibrugarh from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. Since it is a busy airport, local transport to get from the airport to the main city is easily available.

By Rail

Dibrugarh is where the first railway service in all of Northeast India started on 1st May, 1882. The city now has an elaborate railway network which connects Dibrugarh to all major cities in India like Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kolkata, Delhi etc.  The new Dibrugarh Railway Station on the outskirts of the city at Banipur is the largest railway station in all of North East India.

Local transport is easily available to get from the railway station to anywhere in the city.

By Road

Dibrugarh is well connected by roads to adjoining cities like Guwahati, Itnagar, Dimapur and Tezpur. There are several private and state run buses that ply between these cities at regular intervals.  Various state owned buses are available from different cities of Assam such as Itanagar (197 km) and Dimapur (261 km) in order to reach Dibrugarh.

How To Reach Dibrugarh

For in-city travel, the local transportation system in Dibrugarh is well-established.

We hope this was helpful. If you have any more questions about how to reach Dibrugarh, we are only a phone call away.
